2016 Annual Pasadena Mayor’s Interfaith Prayer Breakfast

Over 600 people attended the 43rd Annual Pasadena Mayor’s Interfaith Prayer Breakfast.  Mayor Terry Tornek, who just finished his first full year as Pasadena Mayor, gave opening remarks and later introduced the event keynote speaker, Rabbi Marvin Gross, CEO of Union Station Homeless Services.  Manny Medrano served as Master of Ceremonies.  Before breakfast was served, Homenetman Pasadena-Azadamard presented the Colors and our National Anthem was performed by Eliot Middle School’s Choral Ensemble. Rev. Sandra Olewine, of First United Methodist Church of Pasadena, gave the Invocation and the attendees were welcomed by Dr. Richard Cheung, Board President of Friends In Deed.

This year’s theme was “Community Service: Soul of the City” and Rabbi Gross gave a heartfelt and impassioned speech (the text of the speech can be found here).  Rabbi Gross is retiring after 25 years as CEO of USHS and was presented with gifts from the City of Pasadena and Friends In Deed.  The Pasadena High School Vox Vita Choir performed “Shine on Me” and “Let There Be Peace on Earth”.  In between the two songs, Cantor Ruth Berman Harris, from Pasadena Jewish Temple, sang the community prayer.  The event was a huge success and a real nice way to start the morning.

2016 “Networking for a Cause” Event

Haydel Biel partners, Christopher Haydel and Ricky Biel, along with Pasadena realtor Cynthia Cohn and executive leadership strategist Heather Backstrom, put on another stunning bash at the Courtyard by Marriott. This time it was for the benefit of the Pasadena Bad Weather Shelter which is run by Friends in Deed.  The night was filled with nibbles and sips, with live music provided by Misplaced Priorities, along with some outstanding networking opportunities. Smiles and cheers were most definitely had by all. 100% of all the proceeds raised went to the benefit of the Pasadena Bad Weather Shelter through the Friends in Deed program. So of course, the highlight of the evening was the dollars raised to benefit the shelter which now stands at $11,000.00.  Cheers to Haydel Biel, Cynthia Cohn and Heather Backstrom for a spectacular evening and raising money for such a worthy cause!

2015 Jazz On The Green

On a beautiful September evening, we held our “Jazz on the Green” fundraiser.  It was a festive lawn party held at the beautiful and historic Castle Green. Featuring live jazz music, hors d’oeuvres and signature martinis, this fundraising event provided support for Friends In Deed and its mission to alleviate the effects of poverty and to encourage self-sufficiency through the collective efforts of congregations, individuals and community organizations.  We honored The Pasadena Methodist Foundation, Ms. Celia Leaver, and Century Housing.  More than 150 people joined in the festivities.

Back-to-school Event 2015

2015 Back-to-School Event

It seemed like the summer had just started and we were already planning for the kids in our community to be heading back to school.  This year’s Back-to-School event was a huge success.  With the help from members of our faith community, groups, and individuals, we were able to hand out 248 backpacks, filled with school supplies, before the new school year even started.  And since then, we’ve been able to give out another 20+ backpacks and loads more school supplies.

FID Welcome Sign2015 Christmas In July

Friends In Deed likes Christmas so much that we decided to hold our first ever Christmas in July.  We wanted to have an Open House and celebrate our Volunteers and Supporters.  Over 100 people came through Friends In Deed – many of them for the very first time.  We had guided tours, arts & crafts (made by ladies in The Women’s Room) on display, a Wish List for each of Friends In Deed programs, and a delicious BBQ, put together & hosted by our friends, The Good Christian Men of Pasadena. There’s nothing like celebrating Christmas…even in July.
