March 14, 2017 – “Monthly FREE Legal Clinic” hosted by Mental Health Advocacy Services, Inc. and Friends In Deed at First United Methodist Church of Pasadena, in the Great Hall, from 10:30 AM to 1:00 PM.  At this FREE clinic, volunteers and attorneys, from Mental Health Advocacy Services, will provide consultation and information.  No appointments are necessary, but priority will be given to the people that have made appointments.  To schedule an appointment, call (213) 389-2077 Ext. 12 – ask for Pam.  This is an ongoing monthly event, scheduled for the 2nd Tuesday of each month.  Open to the Public.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Ongoing: First Class began January 9, 2016 – Church of Truth Introduction to Sanskrit Classes. Beginning on January 9 (and continuing every 2nd Saturday of the month), Church of Truth will be holding 2 hour long classes, from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM.  These on-going workshops will focus on the exploration and experience of the subtle energies from mantras, meditation, mudras, and puja to enhance health, balance, and spiritual growth.  No Experience Necessary!  There is a suggested donation of $15, but no one will be turned away.  Church of Truth is located at 690 E. Orange Grove Blvd., Pasadena 91104.  Open to the public.

December 13, 2016 – All Saints Church’s Homeless Memorial was held at at All Saints Church (132 N Euclid Ave, Pasadena, CA 91101).  This beautiful memorial, held yearly, paid tribute to the thousands of homeless men and women die on the streets of our nation due to illness, exposure or violence, many from our very own community of Pasadena.  These individuals die without the dignity and respect they deserve.

December 4, 2016 – Sierra Madre United Methodist Church’s “Alternative Gift Fair & Craft Boutique” – Every year, the Alternative Gift Fair & Craft Boutique offers a wide variety of hand-made crafts with the proceeds going to support organizations like Friends In Deed, Family Promise, Heifer International, Imagine No Malaria, Foothill Unity Center, Habitat for Humanity, Church World Service, and Give Ye Them to Eat in Mexico.  The event was held at 695 W. Sierra Madre Blvd., Sierra Madre 91024. 

 

October 6 – November 14, 2016 – Saint Mark’s Episcopal Church Christmas Tree Sale – For the 5th year Saint Mark’s Episcopal Church held their annual Christmas Tree Sale to benefit Friends In Deed.  These trees came from the Pacific Northwest and were cut shortly before arriving here in Southern California.  Trees were available for pickup on Saturday, December 3 in the Saint Mark’s Parking Lot (1014 E. Altadena Dr., Altadena 91001).  These are always some of the freshest and most beautiful trees.  People could choose from a Douglas Fir, Noble Fir, or Grand Fir.  You can also “Donate A Tree” to a local family.  Visit Saint Mark’s Episcopal Church Christmas Tree Sale to learn more about this annual event.  All proceeds come to Friends In Deed.

 

November 8, 2016 – Mental Health Advocacy Services, Inc. and Friends In Deed hosted their monthly”Free Legal Clinic” at First United Methodist Church of Pasadena, in the Great Hall, from 10:30 AM to 1:00 PM.  At this FREE clinic, volunteers and attorneys, from Mental Health Advocacy Services, provided consultation and information.  This FREE clinic is always open to the Public.

 

October 22, 2016 – Crescenta Valley United Methodist Church’s “Empty Bowls: Hope Not Hunger” – CVUMC held their annual Empty Bowls event.  For a donation of $20 (for adults) and/or $15 (for children 12 & under) guests selected a beautifully, handcrafted bowl, filled it with soup, enjoyed the soup, and then took the bowl home.  Reverend Donna Byrns spoke at the event and if you click here, you can watch a great video put together by, Erin, a Girl Scout and one of CVUMC’s youngest members.  Proceeds from this wonderful event went to benefit Friends In Deed, World Service Fund, and Bailey Human Care Center at Tujunga UMC.

October 8, 2016 – “Fish Fry” – Christ the Shepherd Lutheran Church held their Fall Fish Fry.  It was another success.  Folks had their choice of the “Regular Dinner” which consisted of Fish or Ribs or the “Combo Dinner” which included both Fish and Ribs.  All dinners included baked beans, potato salad, and bread.  The Bake Sale was very successful as well.  All proceeds went to benefit the missions of Christ the Shepherd Lutheran Church.

May 5 & 6, 2016 – Celebrate Women and Pioneering Female Playwrights at First United Methodist Church Pasadena (FUMC).  The Drama Committee of Pasadena First United Methodist celebrated Mother’s Day Weekend, and Friends In Deed’s work with vulnerable women, with the performances of two one-act plays by pioneering female playwrights and directed by Maggie Audley and Lori Brodbeck.   The plays were Trifles by Susan Glaspell, which explores domestic emotional abuse in a midwestern farmhouse setting, and Overtones by Alice Gerstenberg, a comedy that experiments with the split subject technique, later used by Eugene O’Neill in Strange Interlude.  Both playwrights were part of the little theater movement of the early 20th century.  They plays, written nearly 100 years ago, remain timely and speak to audiences today.  Susan Glaspell went on to win a Pulitzer Prize for her theater work.  The performances were preceded by a free dinner and more than $400 was raised to benefit the women’s programs at Friends In Deed

February 23, 2016 – Friends In Deed held our Annual Meeting at Sierra Madre United Methodist Church.  This year’s theme is “Uniting In Service – Taking It To The Next Level” and representatives from the Member Congregations discussed the progress Friends In Deed made in 2015 and how we can take our service to the next level in 2016.  We also honored our “Persons of the Year”, Gerry Poulin and Meg Middleman.  A variety of homemade soups were served with bread, followed by delicious desserts, including bundt cakes from Ingrid Kuo’sNothing Bundt Cake shop on South Lake Avenue.  Sierra Madre United Methodist Church is located at 695 West Sierra Madre Blvd., Sierra Madre, CA 91024 (NE corner of Sierra Madre Blvd. & Michillinda Ave.)

 

January 30, 2016 – Church of Truth held their Game Night & Mexican Dinner Fundraiser.  There was food, fun, and laughter.  Church of Truth is located at 690 E. Orange Grove Blvd., Pasadena, CA  91104.

 

December 24, 2015 – Church of Truth held their “Christmas Eve Candle Lighting Ceremony”.  It was a beautiful evening of ceremony and song.  Church of Truth is located at 690 E. Orange Grove Blvd., Pasadena, CA  91104.

 

December 12, 2015 – The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Pasadena Stake) presented “Rejoice and Be Merry!”, a Christmas Concert with The Southern California Mormon Choir.

December 6, 2015 – All Saints Church’s Annual Alternative Christmas Market (ACM) – This annual event was held at All Saints Church (132 N Euclid Ave, Pasadena, CA 91101) in Sweetland Hall. Marlene Martinez, Program Director for The Women’s Room, was at our Friends In Deed table giving out information about our programs & services, as well as selling arts & crafts made by the ladies of The Women’s Room.  The ACM is a wonderful opportunity for friends & family to gather in good company, learn about worthy projects, both local and international, and provide individuals an opportunity to donate to organizations and projects in the name of loved ones.  If you missed it this year, be on the look out for it next year.  

 

December 6, 2015 – Sierra Madre United Methodist Church’s Alternative Gift Fair & Craft Boutique – This annual event was held in the Sierra Madre United Methodist Church (695 W. Sierra Madre Bvld., Sierra Madre, CA 91024) Parking Lot (entrance on Michillinda Ave.).  Hand-made crafts will be available for purchase. Reverend Donna Byrns, FID Executive Director of Friends In Deed, was at the Friends In Deed table with information about our programs.  Our table also contained items made by the ladies, from The Women’s Room.  The proceeds, from the Gift Fair & Craft Boutique, went to benefit many non-profit organizations, including Friends In Deed, Heifer International, Church World Service, Family Promise, Foothill Unity Center, Habitat for Humanity, Imagine No Malaria, and Give Ye Them To Eat In Mexico to name a few. If you missed it this year, be on the look out for it next year. 

 

October 20 – November 16, 2015 – Saint Mark’s Episcopal Church held their annual Christmas Tree Sale to support Friends In Deed.  This was the 4th year that St. Mark’s has been having the Christmas Tree Fundraiser.  The trees are beautiful and very fresh when delivered.  The website, Saint Mark’s Episcopal Church Christmas Tree Sale, is still up, but sales have closed until next year.

November 1, 2015 – Assumption of the Blessed Mary Catholic Church hosted the Knights of Columbus Pancake Breakfast .  Reverend Donna Byrns, Executive Director of Friends In Deed, spoke about The Bad Weather Shelter, this upcoming season, and that vital part of the Friends In Deed ministry.  The proceeds of the Pancake Breakfast went to help the Bad Weather Shelter. Assumption has volunteered to prepare dinner on a night in January, so if you are interested in volunteering that night, please let them know.

 

Oct. 27, 2015 – First United Methodist Church of Pasadena held a Free Legal Clinic, put on by Mental Health Advocacy Services, Inc. and Friends In Deed.  This Clinic was held in the Great Hall, at FUMC (500 E. Colorado Blvd., Pasadena 91101).

 

October 18, 2015 at 10:00 AM – Christ the Shepherd Lutheran Church held their Women in Ministry Sunday. This special service celebrates women who have worked in the church as Ministers or held other offices.  Christ The Shepherd has been involved in this special service for, at least, 20 years.  Friends In Deed Executive Director, Rev. Donna Byrns, told her story of Ministry in the church and outside. 

 

October 17, 2015, from 11:00 AM – 3:00 PM – Christ the Shepherd Lutheran Church held their GIANT FISH FRY AND BAKE SALE!  This twice yearly fundraising event for their church is incredibly popular.  And this year was no different.  They ran out of food and sold more than 90 plates of fish, ribs, or a combination of both.  Be on the lookout for the next Giant Fish Fry sometime in 2016.

 

October 4, 2015 at 9:00 AM – San Marino Community Church held their World Communion Sunday Celebration. SMCC asked their mission partners to stand with them at the communion table and join in with their courtyard Communion celebration.
