March 11, 2017 – 2nd Annual Making a Difference Benefit Luncheon “For the Love of Women” hosted by the Soroptimist International Altadena/Pasadena.  This year, this annual Luncheon will be honoring State Senator Carol Liu, Jan Sanders, and Lena Kennedy, Door of Hope, and our very own program – The Women’s Room.  This is a chance to honor the work of extraordinary women in our community.  And the work of two important agencies, who address the needs of the under-served women and families of our community, will be rewarded. March 12, 19, & 26; April 2, 2017 – First United Methodist Church of Pasadena “Embracing Each Other”.  This Lent season join our friends at FUMC as they are “getting to know our sisters and brothers, the children of Abraham.” During Lent, many Christians traditionally give up something they enjoy. A more recent tradition is to “take on” something new during this period to strengthen ones faith.  Over three consecutive Sundays, in March, FUMC will host three different speakers for their 10:00 AM Sunday Services.  On March 12, Friends In Deed Executive Director, Rabbi Joshua Levine Grater will be the featured speaker, followed by Milia Islam-Majeed, Executive Director of the South Coast Interfaith Council, on March 19, and Reverend Dr. James M. Lawson, Jr., Pastor Emeritus of Holman United Methodist Church, on March 26.  And then on April 2, join all three speakers and the FUMC community for a panel discussion and conversation.  This event is OPEN to the public.

March 23, 2017 – The Jewish Federation’s “2017 Annual Women’s Forum” – The Jewish Federation of San Gabriel and Pomona Valleys is holding their annual forum “honoring women who make a difference”.  This year’s Keynote Speaker will be former Friends In Deed Executive Director, Reverend Donna Byrns.  She will be speaking on “The Sacred Mission of Women”.  Tickets are $45.  The Forum will be held at the Courtyard Marriot at 700 W. May 4, 2017 – 44th Annual Pasadena Mayor’s Interfaith Prayer Breakfast – Join Pasadena Mayor Terry Tornek, Friends In Deed, Pasadena Civic and Religious leaders, and other members of our Pasadena community for this enduring Pasadena tradition designed to bring together Pasadena residents, and civic and religious leaders across all denominations. RECENT PAST EVENTS

February 22, 2017 – The Women’s Room 10th Anniversary Celebration – Throughout 2017, Friends In Deed will be celebrating 10 years of The Women’s Room.  To kick things off, we held a party on Feb. 22 at the Brookside Golf & Country Club, in the Mediterranean Room.  More than 300 people were in attendance and the evening was a lot of fun.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

February 14, 2017 – Mental Health Advocacy Services, Inc. and Friends In Deed hosted their monthly”Free Legal Clinic” at First United Methodist Church of Pasadena, in the Great Hall, from 10:30 AM to 1:00 PM.  At this FREE clinic, volunteers and attorneys, from Mental Health Advocacy Services, provided consultation and information.  This FREE clinic is always open to the Public.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Janaury 31, 2017 – City Council Candidate Forum on Affordable Housing – All Saints Episcopal Church was the site for this candidate forum discussing affordable housing in Pasadena.  The host for the evening was Rev. Mike Kinman (Rector of All Saints Church) and moderated by FID Executive Director, Rabbi Joshua Levine Grater.  Candidates from Districts 3, 5, and 7 took part in the discussion and debate on affordable housing in Pasadena.  The event was open to the public and a large crowd was on hand to ask questions, listen, and leave with information to ponder regarding this important issue.  

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

January 26, 2017 – “Meet & Greet our New Executive Director: Rabbi Joshua Levine Grater” – New Friends In Deed Executive Director, Rabbi Joshua Levine Grater took the helm on January 3, 2017.  On the 26th, from 7:30 AM to 9:00 AM,  more than 40 people came by to welcome and meet Rabbi Grater, break bread, see other folks from our community, and hear about our exciting plans for 2017.  A light breakfast was served.  Friends In Deed is located at 444 E. December 18, 2016 – The 2nd annual Friends In Deed “Christmas With The Kids” was held at Friends In Deed.  Again this year, we partnered with Vroman’s Bookstore, who put up their Giving Tree with names of children from our Food Pantry community in their two stores.  We also worked with some of our member congregations who also purchased gifts for the children.  First Baptist Church Pasadena, Ahiah Center for Spiritual Living, and three different Wards of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Pasadena, South Pasadena, and Huntington Ward Relief Society).  We had more than 120 kids registered and there were lots of happy, smiling faces on Sunday.

December 4, 2016 – Sierra Madre United Methodist Church’s “Alternative Gift Fair & Craft Boutique” – Every year, the Alternative Gift Fair & Craft Boutique offers a wide variety of hand-made crafts with the proceeds going to support organizations like Friends In Deed, Family Promise, Heifer International, Imagine No Malaria, Foothill Unity Center, Habitat for Humanity, Church World Service, and Give Ye Them to Eat in Mexico.  The event was held at 695 W. Sierra Madre Blvd., Sierra Madre 91024. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

November 20, 2016 – Pasadena Jaycees “Operation Gobbler Thanksgiving Turkey Give-A-Way” was held at Friends In Deed.  This annual event, put together by the Jaycees, is for the Friends In Deed Food Pantry community.  On Sunday, more than 290 turkeys and bags of food were given to the folks that came by.  Our Food Pantry gave out another 60+ turkeys over the next three distribution days.

November 19 – December 3, 2016 – Ten Thousand Villages Pasadena “Benefit Shopping Event” – This annual event is designed to help give back to the community.  When customers purchased items from the store and mentioned “Friends In Deed”, Ten Thousand Villages Pasadena donated 15% of the total purchase amount to our organization.  On November 19, they held their annual Benefit Shopping Kickoff party at their store.  

 

 

 

 

 

 

October 6 – November 14, 2016 – Saint Mark’s Episcopal Church Christmas Tree Sale – For the 5th year Saint Mark’s Episcopal Church held their annual Christmas Tree Sale to benefit Friends In Deed.  These trees come from the Pacific Northwest and are cut shortly before arriving here in Southern California.  Trees were available for pickup on Saturday, December 3 in the Saint Mark’s Parking Lot (1014 E. Altadena Dr., Altadena 91001).  These are always some of the freshest and most beautiful trees.  People could choose from a Douglas Fir, Noble Fir, or Grand Fir.  You can also “Donate A Tree” to a local family.  Visit Saint Mark’s Episcopal Church Christmas Tree Sale to purchase your tree.  All proceeds come to Friends In Deed.

November 6, 2016 – Pasadena CROP Hunger Walk – This annual event, sponsored by Church World Service, took place at Flintridge Prep, on Sunday, November 6.  CROP Hunger Walks have been taking place across the country since 1969.  The Pasadena CROP Hunger Walk is one of 1,000+ across the nation, symbolizing the walk many around the world must make for basic resources such as food, water, shelter and protection. Money raised supports food programs in emergency response, as well as longer-term solutions like enhancing food security and providing sustainable safe water supplies. At this time it appears that at least $30,000 has been raised this year.

October 22, 2016 – Crescenta Valley United Methodist Church’s “Empty Bowls: Hope Not Hunger” – CVUMC held their annual Empty Bowls event.  For a donation of $20 (for adults) and/or $15 (for children 12 & under) guests selected a beautifully, handcrafted bowl, filled it with soup, enjoyed the soup, and then took the bowl home.  Reverend Donna Byrns spoke at the event and if you click here, you can watch a great video put together by, Erin, a Girl Scout and one of CVUMC’s youngest members.  Proceeds from this wonderful event went to benefit Friends In Deed, World Service Fund, and Bailey Human Care Center at Tujunga UMC.

September 28, 2016 – “Jazz On The Green” Fall Fundraiser at the historic Castle Green – We returned to Castle Green for the 3rd year in a row for our Fall Fundraiser, Jazz On The Green.  It was a fantastic evening of live jazz music, fantastic food and drink, meeting and mingling with friends, and a silent auction all to support Friends In Deed and honor different people and organizations in our community.  This event directly benefitted all of our programs; The Bad Weather Shelter, The Women’s Room, The Food Pantry, and Norma’s Nook.  Click here to learn more about the event.

July 26 & 27 and August 2 & 3, 2016 – Friends In Deed Annual Back To School Backpack Drive.  This annual event, for the Friends In Deed Food Pantry community, was a huge success again. We were able to give out more than 275 backpacks, filled with school supplies, to help get the kids ready for a new school year.

May & June, 2016 – Longtime Friends In Deed supporter, community volunteer, and celebrity hair stylist Joseph Rene (Joseph Rene Salon) held a “Salon Drive” for Friends In Deed.  All May and June, Joseph donated $25 to Friends In Deed for every hair service purchased at his salon.  His salon is located at 99 S. Oak Knoll Ave., Pasadena, CA 91102.  

 

 

May 25, 2016 – Soroptimist International Altadena/Pasadena held their Tea Luncheon “Making a Difference: Celebrating Service” at the Pasadena Hilton (168 S. Los Robles Ave., Pasadena 91101) celebrating The Women’s Room at Friends In Deed and Door of Hope.  The Boutique opened at 10:30 AM with the Tea Luncheon being served at 11:30 AM.  There was also an Awards and Fashion Show.  

 

May 10, 2016 – Mental Health Advocacy Services, Inc. and Friends In Deed hosted their “Monthly Free Legal Clinic” at First United Methodist Church of Pasadena, in the Great Hall, from 10:30 AM to 1:00 PM.  At this FREE clinic, volunteers and attorneys, from Mental Health Advocacy Services, provided consultation and information.  This FREE clinic is always open to the Public.

 

 

May 5, 2016 – 43rd Annual Pasadena Mayor’s Interfaith Prayer Breakfast was held at the Pasadena Convention Center. Almost 600 people from Pasadena and surrounding cities came to be a part of an event with a theme of “Community Service: Soul of the City”.  Mayor Terry Tornek welcomed everyone and introduced Keynote speaker, Rabbi Marvin Gross.  Rabbi Gross gave a heartfelt and inspiring speech.

 

April 12, 2016 – Mental Health Advocacy Services, Inc. and Friends In Deed hosted their “Monthly Free Legal Clinic” at First United Methodist Church of Pasadena, in the Great Hall, from 10:30 AM to 1:00 PM.  At this FREE clinic, volunteers and attorneys, from Mental Health Advocacy Services, provided consultation and information.  This FREE clinic is always open to the Public.

 

 

April 9, 2016 – “Art from the Heart: To benefit Norma’s Nook and The Women’s Room” – Bishop Beverly Shamana hosted a lovely tea and springtime art tour of her home that included her own artistic creations and artifacts from her travels.  The afternoon included music, tea, tasty bites, a gift and an art tour that also showed Bishop Shamana’s photography, mosaic, steam punk and gourd artwork as well as a look at vintage pieces such as her refurbished vintage pump organ.  

 

 

March 30, 2016 (ALL DAY) – A FUNdraiser, in support of Friends In Deed, was held at the California Pizza Kitchen, at 99 N. Los Robles Ave., Pasadena.  Coordinated by Gabriella & Madison, from Girl Scout Troop 14191, who are working on their Girl Scout Silver Award Project, anyone who took the below flyer to this particular CPK would have 20% of their total check donated to Friends In Deed.  

 

 

March 8, 2016 – Mental Health Advocacy Services, Inc. and Friends In Deed held a “Monthly Free Legal Clinic” at First United Methodist Church of Pasadena, in the Great Hall, from 10:30 AM to 1:00 PM.  First United Methodist Church of Pasadena is located at 500 E. Colorado Blvd., Pasadena 91101.  At the FREE clinic, volunteers and attorneys, from Mental Health Advocacy Services, provided consultation and information.  

 

 

February 23, 2016 – Friends In Deed held our Annual Meeting at Sierra Madre United Methodist Church.  This year’s theme is “Uniting In Service – Taking It To The Next Level” and representatives from the Member Congregations discussed the progress Friends In Deed made in 2015 and how we can take our service to the next level in 2016.  We also honored our “Persons of the Year”, Gerry Poulin and Meg Middleman.  A variety of homemade soups were served with bread, followed by delicious desserts, including bundt cakes from Ingrid Kuo’s Nothing Bundt Cake shop on South Lake Avenue.  Sierra Madre United Methodist Church is located at 695 West Sierra Madre Blvd., Sierra Madre, CA 91024 (NE corner of Sierra Madre Blvd. & Michillinda Ave.)

February 18, 2016 – “Networking For A Cause” was hosted by Ricky Biel, of Haydel, Biel and Associates, Heather Backstrom, of Backstrom Leadership Strategies, and Cynthia Cohn, of Mark and Cynthia Cohn Realtors.  This was a mix and mingle event with the proceeds going to support our Bad Weather Shelter.  There was an incredible turnout of people who were treated to listen to live music, enjoy complimentary wine & Hors d’oeuvres, and who had the opportunity to meet people, develop new or build upon existing business relationships, and help to make our community a better place.  There will also be a Silent Auction.

February 7, 2016 – “Hike for the Homeless” – Friends of Echo Mountain hosted the “Hike for the Homeless” event to benefit our Bad Weather Shelter and homeless community.  It was a beautiful Sunday morning and we were setup next to the entrance to The Cobb Estate.  Throughout the morning we received donations from more than 60 different donors.  From shoes and clothing to backpacks and sleeping bags, we received plenty of items that will benefit our homeless community through all elements.  The event took the hiking community, their love of the outdoors, and a desire to help those in need and combined it with the need of Friends In Deed’s homeless community.  Everyone who donated received a 20% of coupon from REI.  It was a win for everyone.  To learn more the “Hike for the Homeless” Facebook visit their page here

 

January 21 & 22, 2016 – The University of Southern California hosted “1 in 4 – 2nd National Convening on Unaccompanied Homeless Women”.  This event focused on the fact that “1 in 4 sheltered homeless adults is an unaccompanied woman”.  This gathering brought together national leaders and researchers, policymakers, Executive Directors and senior staff, Board members, and innovative practitioners to learn from one another and to look to the future together on this under-researched, poorly funded, heavily represented population in homelessness
and learn “what’s working” across the country. 

 

 

December 12, 2015 – Youth For Human Rights and United For Human Rights, Pasadena held a panel discussion on “Homelessness, Poverty and Hunger: How Do We Fix It?”.  Friends In Deed Executive Director, Reverend Donna Byrns, took part in the discussion that focus on homelessness, poverty, and hunger in our community.  This annual event was held in honor of U.N. Human Rights Day at the Church of Scientology, of Pasadena (35 South Raymond Ave, Pasadena 91105). 

 

December 6, 2015 – Fifth Annual West San Gabriel Valley All-Star Girls Volleyball match was held at Pasadena Poly High.  In each match, All-Stars from local public schools took on All-Stars from the local private schools.  The first match starts at 5:30 PM.  The event benefited the different programs here at Friends in Deed.  Private teams win at San Gabriel Valley All-Star Girls Volleyball event (Pasadena Star News)

 

December 6, 2015 – All Saints Church’s Annual Alternative Christmas Market (ACM) – This annual event was held at All Saints Church (132 N Euclid Ave, Pasadena, CA 91101) in Sweetland Hall. Marlene Martinez, Program Director for The Women’s Room, was at our Friends In Deed table giving out information about our programs & services, as well as selling arts & crafts made by the ladies of The Women’s Room.  The ACM is a wonderful opportunity for friends & family to gather in good company, learn about worthy projects, both local and international, and provide individuals an opportunity to donate to organizations and projects in the name of loved ones.  If you missed it this year, be on the look out for it next year.  

 

December 6, 2015 – Sierra Madre United Methodist Church’s Alternative Gift Fair & Craft Boutique – This annual event was held in the Sierra Madre United Methodist Church (695 W. Sierra Madre Bvld., Sierra Madre, CA 91024) Parking Lot (entrance on Michillinda Ave.).  Hand-made crafts will be available for purchase. Reverend Donna Byrns, FID Executive Director of Friends In Deed, was at the Friends In Deed table with information about our programs.  Our table also contained items made by the ladies, from The Women’s Room.  The proceeds, from the Gift Fair & Craft Boutique, went to benefit many non-profit organizations, including Friends In Deed, Heifer International, Church World Service, Family Promise, Foothill Unity Center, Habitat for Humanity, Imagine No Malaria, and Give Ye Them To Eat In Mexico to name a few. If you missed it this year, be on the look out for it next year. 

 

November 21 – December 6, 2015 – Ten Thousand Villages‘ Benefit Shopping Event – During this two week period, the Pasadena Ten Thousand Village store (567 S. Lake Avenue, Pasadena, CA 91101) would donate 15% of all purchases to Friends In Deed when mentioning that you are a supporter of Friends In Deed.    

 

November 19, 2015 – The San Gabriel Valley Consortium on Homelessness’ 6th Annual Summit – The Petition: Building A Community Voice To End Homelessness was held at the First Church of the Nazarene-Pasadena (3700 East Sierra Madre Blvd., Pasadena, CA 91107).  The Summit had Internationally recognized speakers and panel participants, from LAHSA, United Way, Fuller Theological Seminary, LA County Executive’s Office and other community leaders.  You can still visit 6th Annual Summit – The Petition: Building A Community Voice to End Homelessness to find out more about the day’s Events.  

 

November 8, 2015 – Pasadena CROP Hunger Walk – It was a beautiful day again this year for the Walk.  It took place at Flintridge Prep.  Besides raising about $29,500 (by 3pm on that Sunday) for the fight against hunger, poverty, and disaster relief, about 750 Hygiene Kits had been collected to go toward the Syrian Refugee Crisis.  Between the Westridge School for Girls (475 kits), Flintridge Prep students, and some of the CROP Walk Churches, about 750 Hygiene kits were shipped out the following week.  This was the 40th year for the Pasadena CROP Hunger Walk and it continues to be a BIG hit.  

 

November 7, 2015 – Bad Weather Shelter Staff Training – was held at Pasadena Covenant Gymnasium (539 N. Lake Ave.), from 10:00am to 12:00pm.

 

Oct. 27, 2015 – A Free Legal Clinic, hosted by Mental Health Advocacy Services, Inc. and Friends In Deed, was held in the Great Hall, at First United Methodist Church of Pasadena (500 E. Colorado Blvd., Pasadena 91101), from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM.  

 

Oct. 17, 2015 – Bad Weather Shelter Mandatory Volunteer Meeting – held at Pasadena Covenant Gymnasium (539 N. Lake Ave.), from 10:00am to 12:00pm

Sept. 26, 2015 – South Lake Avenue Rooftop Cinema Series held a screening of “Tron Legacy”.  Friends In Deed had a table there and met with our friends from PMRG and the Pasadena Jaycees.

 

Sept. 26, 2015 – 8th Annual Health Summit was held at the Jackie Robinson Community Center (1020 N. Fair Oaks Ave.).  We saw a lot of old friends and met some new friends.  We are excited to be a part of the 9th Annual Health Summit next year.

Sept. 20, 2015 – BHNA Emergency Preparedness Fair was held at McDonald Park in the NE corner (on Mar Vista Avenue).  We had the opportunity to chat with a lot of people about FID and BHNA’s desire to get community prepared for a disaster or emergency by stocking up on a month’s supply worth of food and how that food can be donated to FID in a year’s time if it isn’t used.  Great information at this event.
